OBITUARY

Caillet, Marie

Marta Marie Caillet, 94, died Thursday, May 20, 2010, in Denton. She was born on September 7, 1915 to Fleury Paul and Laura Riehn Caillet at the family home in Dallas County, on their farm bordered by Lovers Lane and Inwood Road. A descendant of the Reverchon family, French settlers in the La Reunion colony in west Dallas, she attended school in Highland Park, and was graduated from Texas State College for Women (now Texas Woman's University), with a bachelor's degree in clothing and textiles in 1937 and a master of arts in 1939. She taught clothing and textiles for 33 years at Southwestern Louisiana Institute in Lafayette (now the University of Louisiana Lafayette). On her retirement she moved to Oak Point, Texas, where she lived for 29 years. While in Lafayette, she continued her mother's interest in iris gardening, and became interested in the native irises of Louisiana. She was a charter member of the Society for Louisiana Irises and served for years as an officer, board member, newsletter editor, and unofficial historian. A special garden award was created in her honor by the Society, and her collection of papers and articles has been donated to the Louisiana iris archives at UL Lafayette. After moving to Oak Point, she became an active member of the Iris Society of Dallas and the American Iris Society, receiving numerous awards from those organizations, including the prestigious AIS Gold Medal in 2005. She was a contributor and co-editor of two volumes on Louisiana irises, and wrote hundreds of articles for garden magazines and iris publications. She presented programs and hosted tours of her garden for more than 25 years. Five Louisiana irises have been named in her honor. Marie was preceded in death by her brother Otto R. Caillet, MD, sisters Louise C. Dieterich, Shirley C. Welch, and twin sister Margaret C. Swann; nephew Paul R. Caillet, niece Kay Caillet Lee, great-nephew Jonathan Lee, and great-niece Barbara Kurrus. Her survivors include nephews Arthur F. Dieterich, Julien R. Caillet MD, and Mark Swann; nieces Shirley D. Lusk, Nancy D. Kurrus, Elizabeth C. McCullough, Susan S. Sutherland, and Laura S. Hons; more than 65 greats and great-greats; and a multitude of friends. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no service. Memorials may be sent to the Society for Louisiana Irises, c/o Bobbie Hutchins, Treasurer, 10319 Caddo Lake Rd, Mooringsport, LA, 71060, or to a charity of your choice. To honor Marie's life and her contributions to yours, plant something special in your garden.
