Car kills 2 teen girls, police say

By Joe Drape

Two 17-year-old girls died early Saturday in Farmers Branch when their car was struck by a vehicle that went through a red light, police said.
Police said Cheryl Freeman and Shanda Boehler, seniors at Newman Smith High School in Carrollton, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at Dennis Road and Josey Lane.
A southbound 1979 Camaro apparently went through a red light a high rate of speed and broadsided the girls' car police said.
An 18-year-old Carrollton man is being held at the Farmers Branch City Jail, pending charges of involuntary manslaughter, investigation of driving while intoxicated and investigation of carrying a forged license, police said.
The driver and a passenger were treated for minor injuries at R. H. Dedman memorial hospital in Farmers Branch, and the driver was later released to police custody.
Betty Holcomb, a friend of the Boehler family, said the two girls were on their way home from Malibu Grand Prix - an amusement park and simulated race car center in Dallas - where they had been visiting friends at a late night youth function sponsored by a church group.
"This is a terrible thing." Ms. Holcomb said. "They were pleasant, pretty and bright young girls and Cared about life."
Ms. Holcomb said the girls had known each other since the fifth grade. She said Shanda Boehler was a member of the high school's rodeo club.
Karen Lewis, a teacher at Newman Smith school, said Cheryl Freeman was quiet in the classroom, but she seemed to be popular with her schoolmates.
Ms. Freeman, a member of the school's drill team, the Troyannes, was enrolled in the vocational office education program. Ms. Lewis said the young woman attended class in the morning and worked for Dixie Drywall in Lewisville.
"The company was very pleased with what she was doing," Ms. Lewis said "It's too bad something like this had to happen."
