Mary Lou graduated from the University of Kansas in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics and remained an avid fan of KU basketball until her death. She was a seventy-five year member of Sigma Kappa Sorority and the Grand Chapter of Kansas Order of the Eastern Star. She also served on the National Pan-Hellenic Council for Sigma Kappa. Mary Lou was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge and Preston Hollow United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas. Turner High School in Carrollton, Texas and was very involved in civic affairs wherever she lived. She also served as a den mother for her three sons in the Boy Scouts.

Mary Lou and Darrel enjoyed life to its fullest; whether it dancing in their home to stay warm in the cold Erie, Pennsylvania winters or enjoying the beach during summer vacations, they were always surrounded by friends and family. Mary Lou was quick with a smile and the sparkle in her eye revealed her fun-loving spirit. She is loved by so many and our lives are fuller because of the time that God shared her with us.
