OBITUARY
 
Robert P. Rainey

Robert P. Rainey, 93, passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2017 in his home in Mesa, AZ. Robert was born in Farmers Branch, TX. He was one eighth Choctaw Indian. Robert joined the United States Navy and was stationed on the SS James Bowie in World War II, earning the rank of Gunner’s Mate Third Class.

Robert worked for Air Research Garrett Turbine in California, transferring to the Phoenix location in 1967. He worked there for 30 years. After moving to Mesa, he began making Indian jewelry, which led to him catching the Kachina bug. Boy, did he make the most beautiful Kachinas. Robert was active in the Wood Carver’s Club in Sunland Village East, where he lived. He was instrumental in teaching many of the other members of the club all he had learned about Kachinas.

Robert is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nadiya; his half-brother, Thomas Rainey, of Holiday Island, AR; and his beloved dog, Tammy. Robert will be missed by all who loved him.
