Gin at Hebron Burns
The Old North Gin, or the Famers gin as it was also called, burned last
Thursday evening at Hebron together with about twelve bales of unginned
cotton at 100 tons of seed held in the gin at the time of the fire. The fire
was discovered in the engine room about five o'clock and had such headway
when seen that all efforts to quench it were unavailing.
The gin was owned by C. W. Furneaux, Hamlin Morgan, J. H. Morgan Jr. and a
few others of the Hebron community and was under the efficient management of
Harry Lord. It was a very old gin and enjoyed a large patron, age and, we
understand, will be rebuilt before another seasons cotton is ready for
ginning.
The loss will be quite heavy but as there was insurance carried it
will be partly cared for and will not fall so heavily upon the owners.
Hebron had two gins and cares for a large amount of cotton, between 2500 and
3000 bales being ginned there during the season. As the cotton is
practically ninety per cent gathered the loss of the gin will not
inconvenience Hebron folks materially at this time in so far as getting
their cotton cared for goes, and they can have a fine new down-to-the-minute
gin ready to care for the crop next seasons.
