HIGHLAND BAPTIST CHURCH
The Dallas Morning News - Saturday, August 19, 2000
Author: Rae DeShong

1225 N. Josey Lane Carrollton, Texas 75006 972-242-3921 www.castlehillsbaptist.com

Pastor: Steve Skinner

Services: Services are held at 9:55 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sundays and 7 p.m. Wednesdays.

Congregation: The Southern Baptist Church has about 130 members.

History: "One interesting thing - we are right now the oldest church in Dallas County," Mr. Skinner said. Founded May 10, 1846, the church first stood near Keenan Cemetery in Farmers Branch. In about six weeks, he said, the church will move to 4561 Josey Lane in Denton County. Members plan to take their historical marker with them, although they will relinquish their position as oldest church in the county.

Some founders' families still worship at the church, which will change its name to Castle Wood Baptist when it moves. In the 1800s it was known as Union Baptist Church, and Elder David Myers was minister and organizer. Two books of church minutes give a glimpse into the life of a pioneer Texas church, and the book History of Dallas County documents its beginnings.

Special Programs: The congregation supports Brazilian missions and an orphanage, Casa Hogar Elim, in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. Recently, the church helped send 82 children from the orphanage to summer camp. The Nuevo Laredo work is part of Mission Outreach International, and several members will go there in December to deliver Christmas gifts.

Members visit Brookhaven Nursing Home on Mondays, and Mr. Skinner is exploring getting involved with Dallas' Union Gospel Mission where he worked in the 1980s.

What makes the church unique: "I think the thing that makes our church unique is that we haven't forgotten our ties to the past," Mr. Skinner said. This means not only church history, but ties to biblical Christianity that are "non-negotiable."
