Hauntings
In the 1973 R. L. Turner Roar is a picture of a haunted house

where we used to congregate.
It was a real spooky place and I believe it was located off Cemetery Hill
Rd. near Rosemeade
Pkwy before that area was developed. I remember it was not far from the
Furneaux Cemetery.
That house was even scary during the daytime! ... Tommy Thompson
-- Hi Ed,
Thank you for posting the picture of the old haunted house! I remember it
well and I also believe it was truly a haunted house.
The first time I visited there was during the daytime. It was during the
winter and was a very cold but sunny day. I was a passenger in a fellow
students car and didn't realize where we were going until we arrived. It was
spooky from the start. The house was about 100 yards from the road. We
walked up slowly and surveyed the property before actually going inside.
Once inside I noticed there was still the old fashioned wallpaper that
looked like something from the 1800's. There was some old furniture and junk
scattered all around the place. The stairs were creepy and dangerous. We
were inside for approximately 10 or 15 minutes before we decided to leave.
As we were leaving, one of my friends said "LOOK!" As we all looked up into
a 2nd floor window we saw what we believed to be an old woman with a very
stern look on her face. She was shaking her right index finger at us. She
was looking directly at us plain as day! It was like she disapproved of our
being there and wanted us to leave. We all took off running to our car and
hauled ass in a big hurry.
The next time I visited there was a few months later. I was with a group of
about a dozen students and we came in four cars. I remember we drove there
coming up from Farmers Branch north on Old Denton Drive. We turned right on
an old asphalt/dirt road which is now Rosemeade. We arrived at the location
around dusk on a Friday night during the summer. The whole group of us
walked slowly towards the front of the house. We had some cold beer and were
ready to party. Just as one of us stepped up onto the front porch, the
screen door began slamming open and shut several times real fast. It was so
loud and sudden that nobody wanted to stick around to investigate. We all
took off running and one guy tripped and fell and I think may have broken
his ankle. I never went back after that.
It would be interesting to know the history of that old house but I'm sure
it would be difficult to research after this amount of time. And who was
that old lady?
Happy Halloween to you too!
Regards,
Tommy
Newman Smith High School
It is said that the spirit of Abigail, a worker in the theater
department of Newman Smith High School, is often seen on the catwalk high
above the stage and playing with the gels on the spots. She is said to have
died while storing boxes under the stage. Students sometimes hit the
stage with a hammer three times to keep her from interfering with a show.
It is reported that they can spot her standing in the set's shadows when
reviewing the tape of a show. |
