OBITUARY

A.J. Airoldi , former Farmers Branch mayor, dies

Retired Army Lt. Col. A.J. Airoldi , a former mayor of Farmers Branch, died Thursday morning, apparently from a heart attack. He was 84.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Dallas.

As mayor from 1962 to 1968, Mr. Airoldi played an instrumental role in establishing a town library and a parks and recreation department, his family said. He also called for zoning requirements and the industrialization of town on the west side of Stemmons Freeway.

Mr. Airoldi was a broker for 35 years and a member of the Rotary Club.

He and his wife, Jean Schier, celebrated 65 years of marriage two weeks ago.

Mrs. Airoldi said she wasn't sure her marriage would last so long after her husband suffered a severe shrapnel injury in 1945 during World War II while fighting in the Battle of the Bulge.

"They sent him home from the hospital and said he couldn't live more than six months," Mrs. Airoldi said.

Besides his wife, Mr. Airoldi is survived by his son, Tony Airoldi ; two daughters, Lynn Bertrand and Gail Samuels; eight grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren.
