For those of you that may or may not know, Rodolfo G. Almendarez
passed away on Thanksgiving Day. Some of you may know him as Big Rudy,
Rudy, or Dog.
You see, back in October of 2018 he suffered a heart attack due to
Congestive Heart Failure. When he awoke, he was told that his heart was
only operating at 5%. Following his diagnoses, he was faced with further
complications that would no longer allow him to continue dialysis
treatments. The doctors informed him that due to his current state it
would be too risky to perform any type of surgery on him. They followed
with "Mister Rodolfo; we want to admit you to hospice where you will
have about 2 weeks to live comfortably". Well, their first mistake was
letting him know he had an option... to live... regardless of the risks.
He took one look around the room at his family and said "I am not ready
to die and want to live to see my Granddaughter graduate college and my
son have a family". Even after being told he did not have much longer to
live, he was not thinking of himself. Shortly thereafter, he convinced
the medical staff to move forward with a very risky procedure that could
have taken up to 2 hours... he was out in less than 30 minutes.
He continued to undergo multiple procedures. However, his heart
continued to grow stronger. At one point, his heart Ejection Fraction
reached 35%! No matter what he was going through he never gave up, nor
did he lose his sense of humor. You could walk into any hospital or
rehab facility and would quickly learn that he was their favorite.
Speaking of favorite, you could ask every nurse, surgeon, doctor,
janitor, and any other faculty member what his favorite finger was...
and they would show you!
He left behind a ton of good memories, even during the hardest times. He
never gave up and fought his heart out.
