Arnold
Arthur
Earl Arnold passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 82, on
Nov. 29, 2011.
Born in Fort Worth, Texas, to John Earl Arnold and Rosanna Virginia
Jones, Arthur grew up around the Dallas area, graduated high school in
Carrollton, Texas, and played football for Texas A&M for two years. He
joined the United States Marine Corps in 1947 to serve his country and
support his family. Arthur honorably served his country, spending more
than 20 years in the military, which involved wartime tours of duty in
both Korea and Vietnam. Following his U.S. Marine Corps service from
1947 until 1956, Arthur continued his active duty service with the U.S.
Air Force until retiring in 1969 with his wife and two children at
Travis Air Force Base, California. After a long career with the
military, he began working for the Southern Pacific Railroad for another
20 years, finally retiring in 1989.
Art was a rodeo champion bull riding in his youth, he loved to rope and
ride. Car racing had his interest for a brief period, but he was more at
home in the rodeo. He was a large man in stature, tough on the outside
and stubborn to the core, yet loyal to his family and utterly in love
with his wife, Lillian, until her death in 2003. She always understood
Art’s spirited nature. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and sportsman
until well into his 70s. Lillian encouraged his outdoor pursuits; his
passion for the challenges of nature was unquenchable and she was
happiest when he was happiest.
Four years after Lillian’s passing, Arthur came home to Texas to be with
his daughter, Artice, in Elgin, Texas. There they owned a small ranch
and he enjoyed his remaining years watching his daughter train horses
and riders.
He is preceded in death by his wife of almost 50 years, Ruby Lillian
Arnold; his only son, Orrington Lynn Arnold of Suisun City, Calif.; and
his elder sister, Suidie Negley of San Diego.
He is survived by his only daughter, Artice Earleen Arnold, of Elgin,
Texas; his two younger sisters, Virginia Nutter of Riverside, Calif.,
and Zonella Blankenship of Carrollton, Texas.
The family will receive guests at the Elgin Funeral Home from 6 to 8
p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8. A funeral service will be conducted at Elgin
Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, with the Bishop Orlando Kelm
officiating. Interment is scheduled at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery
on Friday, Dec, 9 at 1:30 p.m.
Arrangements and care are entrusted to the staff of Elgin Funeral Home. |
