OBITUARY

Bishop, Alan B.

Alan B. Bishop, D.D.S., 76, a loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006.

Memorial service: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at First Baptist Church of Arlington, 300 S. Center, Arlington. A private family burial service will be in Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington. Visitation with the family will be in the First Baptist Welcome Center immediately following the memorial service.

Alan Bishop was born Oct. 19, 1930, in Carrollton. He served as senior class president of Carrollton High School in 1948. As class president, he was the master of ceremonies for an exchange program with Irving High School, where he first saw his future wife, Marilyn Short. He attended Baylor University, where he received a bachelor of science in 1952. Alan and Marilyn married in 1951, and he graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1955. Thereafter, he served as a dental officer in the United States Navy on board the USS Nereus, stationed in San Diego, Calif. In 1958, he moved to Arlington to set up his private dental practice. Upon his arrival in Arlington, there were only 12 other dentists in town. He practiced dentistry for over 40 years in the city he loved.

Alan served on the Arlington Parks and Recreation Board from 1965 to 1977. Having achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, he served as assistant scoutmaster with Troop 357 at First Baptist Church, Arlington, and saw two sons and both grandsons also achieve the rank of Eagle. He enjoyed reliving his experiences as a 16-year-old at Philmont Scout Ranch and was very proud of his grandsons' scouting accomplishments. With three sons playing basketball at Arlington High School, Alan spent many nights watching high school basketball games. He was an avid Baylor football and basketball fan and attended every Baylor homecoming game for 30 years. Alan was a member of First Baptist Church of Arlington for 48 years, where he served as a deacon.

He enjoyed vacationing in Cuchara, Colo., with his wife and family. Alan's grandchildren were a very important part of his life, and he received great joy from their accomplishments. His optimistic spirit in life and devotion to others was an inspiration to all who knew him.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents, E. H. and Elsie Bishop; and his sister, Glenda Kirk.

Survivors: Loving wife of 55 years, Marilyn; sons, Craig and his wife, Dana, Bryan and his wife, Robin, and Mark and his wife, Shelia, all of Arlington; grandchildren, Brooks, Blair, Brad, Kristin, Megan and Kate; nieces, Karen Russell of Carrollton and Michiko Short of Redmond, Wash.; nephew, Keith Kirk of Houston; and many cousins.
