OBITUARY MOTHER AND
DAUGHTER PASS AWAY Mrs. Ellen Blackburn and
daughter, Miss Jewell Blackburn; died within three days. Miss Jewell Blackburn,
who died early Sunday morning, was born April 25, 1903, died Dec 1, 1918. Her
death was not a surprise to the family and friends since she has been ill for
more than one year, gradually giving away to a leaking heart. Jewell expressed
her willingness to go, was not afraid to die. While she never joined the church,
she had professed faith in Christ, she was a sweet child, and all who knew her
loved her, the funeral was preached Monday, Dec 2 at 2 p.m. in Union Baptist
church by Rev. P. L. Tomlinson, assisted by Rev. Phillips of the First Baptist
church of this city, after which the remains were layed to rest in the
Perry cemetery. She did not have
long to wait until her mother was laid by her side, for in three days she
departed this life, and went to spend eternity with four of her children.
Mrs. Ellen Blackburn was born July 7, 1872, was married to
Dr. R. L. Blackburn, June 3, 1891, to this union seven children was born, three
living and four dead. Sister Blackburn professed faith in Jesus Christ our Lord
at the age of 14 years and joined the Cemetery Hill Baptist church. She
has lived a consistent Christian life, and the church loses a true and faithful
member, her faith in Christ was strong and powerful, she was one of the best
women of the town and will be missed by every one. Never did a mother love her
family more than she did.
In all of her sickness she was composed and seemed to know
that she could not live long. Every thing that could be done was done, but in
spite of all the Lord called for her to come up higher Wednesday morning at an
early hour. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Union
Baptist church conducted by her pastor, Rev. P. L. Tomlinson.
Mrs Blackburn is survived by her husband, Dr. R. L. Blackburn
and three children, Mrs. W. L. Morris of Dallas, Joe Blackburn of Carrollton and
Luke Blackburn, who is in the United States Army and all were at home to attend
the funeral.
This loss has brought a great sorrow upon this family, but
God in his wisdom knoweth best. Let us bow in submission to his will and look
forward to a better day and better world. I commend the family to Gods words and
grace for comfort in this hour of darkness as we consign these bodies to mother
earth. Let us wait and study these beautiful lines from the poet.
Unveil thy bosom, faithful tomb;
Take this new treasure to thy trust;
And give these sacred relics room
To slumber in the silent dust.
Nor pain for grief nor anxious fear
Invades thy bonds; no mortal woes.
Can reach the peaceful sleeper here,
While angles watch the soft response.
So Jesus slept; God's dying Son
Passed through the grave and blessed the bed
Rest here blest saint, till from his throne
The morning break and pierce the shade.
Break from his throne, illustrious morn;
Attend, O earth, his sovereign
Word;
Restore thy trust; a glorious form
Shall then arise to meet the Lord.
Why do we mourn departed friends,
Or shake at death's alarms ?
Tis but the voice that Jesus send
To Call them to his arms.
