Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Melanie Maxine Bullock, PhD, NCC

Dr. Melanie Maxine Bullock, 67, passed peacefully from this life into the loving arms of our Lord on June 11, 2024, surrounded by her family. Her beautiful, bright smile and generous spirit will be missed by her family, friends, and caregivers.

Melanie was born July 21, 1956 to Howard Wayne and Caroline Maxine (Trompler) Bullock and baptized August 5, 1956, in Stillwater, OK. The oldest of three girls, her early childhood was spent in Tennessee, Indiana, and Oklahoma, where she was confirmed into the faith May 17, 1970 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Tulsa. She then moved to Texas with her family where she graduated in 1974 from RL Turner High School, Carrollton.

Melanie loved to read, dance and travel and for the next few years she was employed at a variety of jobs. She was a travel agent/tour guide which led her on many adventures to places like Mexico, Europe and Hawaii. Her home was filled with collections from her travels, but her favorites were Japanese art—prints, paper fans and tea sets. She also loved jewelry and shoes!

Melanie left the travel industry to pursue her passion for Counseling. She moved to California and earned her BA in Psychology from Azusa Pacific University in 1987. She returned to Texas and made her home in Denton where she continued her education at the University of North Texas. She was employed in several positions over the years at UNT including Director of E-learning and Publications at the Center for the Study of Work Teams.

In 1996, Melanie received her Masters in Counseling Education and was an award winning counselor for various organizations, including the Texas Youth Commission (1996 Outstanding Achievement Award, McFadden Ranch), Denton Friends of the Family (1998 Volunteer Service Award), UNT Counseling and Testing, and UNT Child and Family Research Clinic.

Melanie's hard work paid off and in 2003 she received the Doctorate of Psychology from UNT! What a grand day!

From 2003-2008, Dr. Melanie Bullock taught various courses in counseling at the University of Texas - Pan American, Edinburg, the University of Texas, El Paso, Hardin-Simmons University, Abilene, and Lamar University, Beaumont. Throughout her teaching career, she consistently received high evaluation ratings from her students and really loved her work. Her specialization and research interest was in the use of technology in counseling. She helped develop and design online counseling courses and workshops for the University system and was the webmaster for many organizations.

Dr. Bullock was an accomplished member of the academic and professional community. In addition to her teaching duties, she published nine articles on topics such as Cyber Bullying, Global Advocacy, and Relationship Violence. She was also an editor for more than two dozen publications on the local, national and international levels. In addition, she was an invited presenter at many professional conferences from Atlanta to Honolulu to Montreal, and in 2007, Dr. Bullock presented at the International Counseling Conference in Shanghai, China!

Dr. Bullock was a member of more than a dozen professional organizations, including the American College Counseling Association (2005 Service Award), Chi Sigma Iota Honor Society (2003 and 2001 Service Awards), Texas College Counseling Association and the Texas Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, where over the years she served as chairperson of several committees, as Treasurer, as Secretary, and as President (2006 President's Service Award).

In 2008 while at Lamar University,Beaumont, Dr. Bullock suffered the first in a series of strokes that would lead to her early retirement in 2013. She bought a home in Hutto to be near family and though physically challenged, Dr. Bullock continued being involved in her community, church, family events, and had many adventures with her mother, Caroline. She loved keeping up with current events, her nieces and nephews, various arts and crafts, and her beloved Shih Tzu, Katie.

Melanie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Taylor, where she continued using her technology and writing skills to publish the church newsletter, Sunday bulletins, the website, and helped the Pastor with other editing tasks.

Melanie was well-loved by the Walkers, her Hutto neighbors who looked out for each other and engaged in friendly political debates. She became very close friends and travel companions with a very special family, Hector and Carmen Aguirre. She loved and babysat their three children, Johanna, Kamille, and Hector.

Melanie's love language was gifts.. She had a knack for choosing, and beautifully wrapping, just the right gift for her loved ones, including hand-stitched heirlooms or Pioneer Woman dishes! It made sense that she would also be involved with Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse that delivers millions of gift-filled shoeboxes to boys and girls around the world.

Melanie will be dearly missed but her family and friends celebrate that she is no longer physically struggling but dancing and traveling through heaven with her loved ones that have gone before her, especially her father Wayne and her paternal grandmother Lorena (Schmidt) Mercer.

Melanie is survived by her dear mother, Caroline; her sisters and brothers-in-law Tammy and John DeYoung, Dawn and Delton Weiser; and her beloved nieces and nephews Nathan & Taylor DeYoung, Emily DeYoung, Rachel & Caleb Riemer, Jonathan & Emily Weiser, Joshua & Jessica Weiser, Sarah Weiser; and 8 great nieces and nephews, Audrey, Remington, Lakelynn, Elsie, Everett, Anna, Bennett, and Benjamin.

Melanie is also survived by her very dear cousins Dr. Vicky Ann Trompler and Dr. David Morgan as well as many beloved Aunts, Uncles, & cousins in the Bullock and Trompler families.

Melanie knew Jesus as her Lord and Savior and is resting in His glory. We will all miss her and look forward to the day we will see her again in heaven, where her body knows no pain.
