2 services today for Sylvia M. Butler

Services for Sylvia M. Butler, a retired high school history teacher, will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas and at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas.

Ms. Butler, 56, died Sunday at Zale Lipshy University Hospital in Dallas from injuries suffered in an auto accident.

She taught at Newman Smith High School in Carrollton from 1981 to 1994. She also taught in the Dallas district, starting at H. Grady Spruce High School in 1967 and moving to W.T. White High School in 1968. She taught there until 1981 and was named Teacher of the Year in 1976.

She also taught history at Brookhaven Community College in Farmers Branch for several years during the late 1970s.

Ms. Butler was chairwoman of the Newman Smith history department before she retired in 1994.

She is survived by her sister, Lynda Wigal of Franklin, Tenn.; and brother, Robert C. Lane Jr. of El Paso.
