Two high school seniors, one other killed in crashes Author: Nancy Calaway, Staff Writer Excessive speed appears to be the cause of two car crashes that killed two R.L. Turner High School seniors last week, Carrollton police said. Michael Kurt Guthrie, 18, of Carrollton died Friday night after he lost control of the car he was driving and it hit a utility pole. Courtney Campbell, 18, of Farmers Branch died Thursday morning after the car she was riding in hit a tree. The driver, David Bailey, 20, of Richardson, was also killed in the crash on East Frankford Road. Police said neither crash involved other cars. Mr. Guthrie was driving a 1990 Honda CRX north on Marsh Lane about 8 p.m. Friday when he lost control and crashed into a utility pole at the Dove Creek Lane intersection, said Sgt. David Sponhour, a spokesman for the Carrollton Police Department. Mr. Guthrie died instantly. There were no passengers. Mr. Guthrie planned to attend college in Houston next year and dreamed of designing cars, his grandmother said. "He was a good little artist. He had beautiful, talented hands," said Mary Frances Guthrie, his grandmother. "He played the violin when he was younger, and he loved cars. "He was a sweet, loving, good-natured boy." Funeral arrangements had not been made Saturday, his grandmother said. Ms. Campbell's family members could not be reached Saturday for comment. The Carrollton -Farmers Branch School District was on spring break last week, and some students may not be aware of the deaths, school officials said. Several grief counselors will be at the high school campus Monday. "It's part of regular crisis response," said Cindy Randle, the district's executive director of public information. "Each high school campus also has a school resource officer, and we will be working with them and the police departments to ask them what are some other things we can do in regard to public safety." John Tepper, president of the Carrollton -Farmers Branch school board, said the district had a program called "Shattered Dreams" at R.L. Turner High last spring. The project, which rotates each year among the district's three high schools, stages the aftermath of a car accident on campus to illustrate the perils of reckless driving, including speeding and drinking and driving, he said.
