CANYON, Texas—The West Texas A&M University community is saddened by the deaths today of Dr. Robin Capt, assistant professor of education, and her 19-year-old son William Michael Capt II, a pre-med major at WTAMU.

Capt, her son William and her husband, William Michael Capt, were killed in a plane crash in the early morning hours of Nov. 11 in Potter County. Their fixed wing, single-engine plane was reported missing around 2 a.m. after it had been reDr. Robin Captrouted from Amarillo's Tradewind Airport to Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport. Searchers found the downed plane at approximately 7:15 a.m. in a lake bed north of U.S. 60 and east of Parsley Road. There were no other occupants in the plane.

Capt joined the WTAMU faculty in August 2008 after serving as chief operating officer of Capt and Smart Consulting Engineers, Inc. from 1995-2008. She joined WTAMU's Graduate School in 2009 as associate dean and had recently returned to the classroom to teach education courses in the College of Education and Social Sciences. She was the recipient of a 2009 Chancellor's Teaching Excellence Award and a 2008 Outstanding Graduate Student Research Paper Award from the Southwest Educational Research Association.

Her son, William Michael, was classified as a junior at WTAMU.

"Dr. Capt was an outstanding faculty member, who was dedicated to her students and to the college," Dr. Eddie Henderson, dean of the College of Education and Social Sciences, said.

University officials shared the news about the Capt family with members of the Department of Education earlier today. Dr. Wade Shaffer, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said Capt's classes will be covered by fellow faculty members who will step in and follow her course outlines so students can complete the classes and receive credit.
