Local Farm Boy Drown In Lake East of Town
Funeral Held For John Paul Caulk At Bolivar, Missouri
John Paul Caulk, 19 year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Caulk, was drowned
Thursday afternoon of last week in the small lake just off Midway Road on
Gladacres farm about three miles east of here.
Young Caulk, who lived on a farm near the lake with his parents, and a
companion, Charles Ray Johnson, 15, went swimming in the lake about 3:30 p.m.
Thursday.
After they had swum about 50 years out into the lake, Caulk suggeste4d they turn
around and not try to reach the opposite shore, Johnson told deputy sheriffs,
"But he hasped and went down before we got back," he continued.
The body was recovered at 6:15 p.m. Thursday by Firemen Lee Roy Moore, Fred
DeFord and Norman Finch of the Dallas central fire station.
The youth had apparently been overcome with the cramps, deputies said. The body
was brought to the Rhoton Funeral home, prior to funeral arrangements. This was
the second drowning victim in Dallas county this year, the first being William
Patrick Nolan, 3, who downed in a foundation hole filled with water at his home
two miles west of Farmers Branch last week.
The Caulk body was taken to Bolivar, Mo., for the funeral and burial in the
boy's birthplace. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock in a
Bolivar Funeral home. Burial was also at Bolivar. John Paul Caulk was born May
29, 1922.
Survivors include the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Caulk; two brothers, Dick of
Dallas and Grover of Perry, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Hurst of Fests, Mo.,
and Freda Mae Caulk of the home address; and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.
T. Caulk of Bolivar, Mo.
