Obituary
Betty was born on 4/8/1928 to Curtis & Nellie Chester Duncan. Her father
owned a farm in Quincy FL. Betty and her six siblings helped with farm
and household chores, and during the lean years of the Depression and
WWII they also did odd jobs after school. In the summer the boys
harvested tobacco, and the girls bundled it to dry- hard work for a
meager salary. After a fire destroyed their home, part of the family
moved to Jacksonville.
While in high school Betty held a part-time job at the Jacksonville
Naval Air Station where she met her first husband in 1945. After his
discharge from the Navy, they moved to his home state of TX where their
daughter Patsy was born. When their marriage ended, Betty became a
working mother. She was a switchboard operator for several years at
Southwestern Bell Telephone.
She married Wallace Chambliss in 1955. Patsy was thrilled when they
provided her with two little sisters, Charlotte and Cynthia. After the
children reached school age, Betty began working at Peter Paul Candy Co.
She later was employed in the school food service for the
Carrollton-Farmers Branch School District, retiring after 30 years at
Janie Stark Elementary. She was always a hard-working woman who put the
needs of her family before her own.
Betty enjoyed spending her free time with her husband and kids. They
liked to picnic at White Rock Lake and swim and fish at Lake Texoma
where they had a small cabin facetiously named The Mansion. They hosted
frequent backyard barbecues with friends and neighbors. Many summers
they joined Betty's siblings and their families in Florida for reunions
with their other Chester & Duncan relatives. Raised in a small town,
young Betty could only dream of seeing foreign countries. But her dream
came true when she traveled to Mexico, Jamaica, England & Ireland.
Wallace was a member of the B.P.O.E., and Betty was a Doe. She was also
a member of the Farmers Branch Women's Club and the Garden Club. She
participated in many activities at the Senior Citizen Center and
especially enjoyed going on day trips.
She lovingly welcomed David Taylor to the family when he married Pat,
and then was happy to add Cindy's husband Jim Sentementes too. Her
grandchildren Nicole, Brian, Chad & Harley Taylor and Amy & Callie
Sentementes brought great joy to her life. Despite saying that it made
her sound old, she was delighted to become a great-grandmother when Mia
& Luke, the children of Nicole & Ken Matarazzo, were born. She was
blessed with additional great-grands: Quarion, Leif & Finn, the sons of
Harley &Paul Peyre, and Chad & Beth Taylor's girls Natalie & Casey.
Betty became ill in March 2017 and died at home on July 20 of congestive
heart failure. She was preceded in death by her parents husband Wallace,
brothers Alver, Levi & Rev. Norman Duncan; sisters Elaine Duncan Helms,
Anitra Duncan Walker& Rev. Ethelene Duncan Stuart and granddaughter
Callie Sentementes.
A memorial service will be held Tues., July 25, at 11:00 a.m. at Rhoton
Funeral Home, 1511 S I-35E Carrollton TX. Visitation is Monday, 6:00-
8:00 p.m, at Rhoton. Those who wish to honor Betty may either send
flowers to the service or make a donation to St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital at stjude.org |
