George William Cockrell

George William Cockrell, 71, of Dallas, TX, son of Mildred May and Judd Daniel Cockrell, passed away on August 25, 2016. George grew up in Denton, TX and attended Denton High School, where he was well known for being among the school's finest baseball players.

He went on to play college baseball at Paris Junior College and later at Sul Ross State University, where he met his first wife, Jean Starr Lewis, and the mother of his two oldest children, Candace Reagan Cockrell of Grapevine, TX and Clinton Baylor Cockrell of Dallas, TX.

George enjoyed 25 years as a football and track coach at junior high and high schools in the Dallas area, including DeWitt Perry Junior High, Byrd and Reed Middle Schools, Woodrow Wilson High School and Duncanville High School.

While coaching at Woodrow Wilson High School, George met and married his second wife, Peggy Phelps Cockrell Phife, and had his youngest daughter, Chelsea Renee Cockrell Lafayette, of Burlington, VT.

After retiring from teaching/coaching, George worked as a contractor at Lowe�s, where he met the love of his life, Lisa Marie Cockrell. They have been married for 9 years.

George is survived by his mother, Mildred May Cockrell; brothers, Jerry Gene Cockrell, Dannie Garrett Cockrell, Michael Judd Cockrell and Billy Allen Cockrell; sisters, Mildred Ann Cockrell Fain and Teresa Cockrell Young; children, Candace Reagan Cockrell, Clinton Baylor Cockrell and Chelsea Cockrell Lafayette; step-children Ashley Marie Lee, Stephanie DeAnne Garrett, Kayla Jo Garrett, Gene Alan Garrett, Jr., and grandchildren, Alexander William Hutto, Shelby Kay Hutto, Isabella Catherine Hutto, Case Baylor Cockrell, Hayden Lee Hutto, Reagan Meredith Hutto, Tyler Lee Moore, Braylynn Lilly Garcia and another baby granddaughter due in December. He is also survived by aunt, Ruby Kerner and cousins, Tommy Kerner, Teresa Cartwright and Tammy Pearson.

He was preceded in death by his father, Judd Daniel Cockrell, son of G.C. Cockrell, former Sheriff of Denton County; brother, Donald Lee Cockrell and cousin, Larry Kerner.

Visitation will held Sunday August 28, 2016 from 1-2 P.M. Funeral service will start at 2:00 P.M. at DeBerry Funeral Directors.
