OBITUARY
In
Memory of
Joe Walter Colwell
December 13, 1919 - January 20, 2014
Joe W. Colwell, age 94, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2014. He was
preceded in death by his parents Charlie J. Colwell and Belle Ward
Colwell, his wife Barbara Allen Colwell and 7 of his siblings. He is
survived by his sister, Ruth Colwell Berryhill, his children, Judith
Colwell Peal, Joyce Colwell Stanfield, Steven A. Colwell, Don W.
Colwell, 15 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 2 great-great
grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. After serving in the U.
S. Navy during World War II, he returned to this, his native state to
take up life as a loving husband, father, and employee. His leadership
skills were enhanced by the opportunities that were presented him,
whether in the business area or service area of the city of Grand
Prairie: he owned and operated his own insurance agency, participated in
city government being elected Mayor and serving on the city council. The
chamber commerce recognized his capabilities by awarding him citizen of
the year. Being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints also provided him opportunities to serve his fellow man. The
wisdom and compassion he displayed while serving as Bishop of the Grand
Prairie 1st Ward of the Dallas, Texas Stake is an example to all who
interacted with him. He loved his family, his church, and his community
to the very last. A public visitation will take place Thursday, January
23, 2014 from 6-8PM at Bean Massey Burge Funeral Home. A celebration of
life will be on Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day
Saints in Grand Prairie, Texas. |
