OBITUARY Gordon Cox,
Barbershop Owner, Dies
Gordon Cox, 52, owner of the Village Barbers at 74 Highland Park Shopping
Village and co-owner of barbershops in the Cedar Crest and Walnut Hill shopping
areas, died of a heart ailment Thursday in a Dallas hospital.
Cox entered the hospital Monday. His home here was 3537 Potomac. He had been a
resident of Dallas for twenty-six years.
Cox was born in Georgia. He often told friends that he started barbering when he
was twelve years old. An uncle who lived at Red Oak, Ellis County, Cox often
recalled, gave him his first pointers on the barber trade. Cox moved here from
Ovilla, Ellis County.
Funeral services, said friends, will probably be held Saturday in the
Weiland-Merritt Funeral Chapel, 2909 Live Oak.
Cox is survived by his wife; a son, Gordon Cox Jr., Dallas; a daughter, Mrs.
Joann Shafer, Dallas; three brothers, W. L. Cox and Raymond Lee Cox, both of
Farmers Branch, and Clarence Cox of Irving; six sisters, Mrs. T. H. Cox, Mrs.
Ted Baer, Mrs. J. C. Owens and Mrs. Myron Thurman, all of Dallas; Mrs. Oscar
Cheshier of Farmers Branch and Mrs. Bill Nutting of Cedar Hill.
