Held In Airman's Death
ABILENE (Spl) - Naymon Culbreath Sr. 37, and Naymon Culbreath Jr., 17, Wednesday
were charged with killing a 21-year-old airman before Taylor County Justice of
the Peace Silas Clark.
The two were charged in connection with the Tuesday night shooting death of
Airman William Derryl Cryer, formerly of Fort Worth, outside his Abilene
apartment.
Witnesses said a car pulled into the alley behind the home and remained parked
there for about 15 minutes.
Charles Cryer, a 17-year-old cousin who lived with the Cryers, said William
Cryer left the house with a .22 rifle and found the occupants of the automobile
puncturing the tires of his automobile.
Charles Cryer said about 12 shots were fired in a gun battle which followed.
"He came back in staggering and bleeding and dropped the rifle on the floor and
fell on the couch," Charles Cryer said, Cryer died en route to the hospital at
Dyess Air Force Base, where he was stationed.
Cullbreath and his son were being held without bond in Taylor County Jail.
Judge Clark said an examining trail was tentatively set for 10 a.m. Feb. 16 at
the Taylor County Courthouse and that bond would be discussed at that time.
Investigating officers reported that earlier Tuesday the Cryer family had been
threatened twice.
Another youth, Charles Cryer related, "came over here about 8:30 p.m. and said
his old man was going to kill all four of us." Later someone made a threatening
telephone call.
Survivors include his wife: a son, William Cryer Jr. of Abilene; his mother Mrs
Lucelle Stack of Carrollton; his father, Derryl Cryer of Forest Hill; a brother,
Larry Ray Cryer of Alamogordo, N.M., grandparents, Mrs. Altha Thomas and Mrs. C.
E. Cryer of Fort Worth; and great-grandmothers, Mrs. Gerta Cranover and MRs.
Emma Dunlap.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday n Syder-Young Chapel in Carrollton with burial
in Carrollton Cemetery. Memorial services will be conducted Thursday at Dyess
AFB Chapel.
