Father, Son Held In Airman's Death
ABILENE (Spl) - Naymon Culbreath Sr. 37, and Naymon Culbreath Jr., 17, Wednesday were charged with killing a 21-year-old airman before Taylor County Justice of the Peace Silas Clark.
The two were charged in connection with the Tuesday night shooting death of Airman William Derryl Cryer, formerly of Fort Worth, outside his Abilene apartment.
Witnesses said a car pulled into the alley behind the home and remained parked there for about 15 minutes.
Charles Cryer, a 17-year-old cousin who lived with the Cryers, said William Cryer left the house with a .22 rifle and found the occupants of the automobile puncturing the tires of his automobile.
Charles Cryer said about 12 shots were fired in a gun battle which followed.
"He came back in staggering and bleeding and dropped the rifle on the floor and fell on the couch," Charles Cryer said, Cryer died en route to the hospital at Dyess Air Force Base, where he was stationed.
Cullbreath and his son were being held without bond in Taylor County Jail.
Judge Clark said an examining trail was tentatively set for 10 a.m. Feb. 16 at the Taylor County Courthouse and that bond would be discussed at that time.
Investigating officers reported that earlier Tuesday the Cryer family had been threatened twice.
Another youth, Charles Cryer related, "came over here about 8:30 p.m. and said his old man was going to kill all four of us." Later someone made a threatening telephone call.
Survivors include his wife: a son, William Cryer Jr. of Abilene; his mother Mrs Lucelle Stack of Carrollton; his father, Derryl Cryer of Forest Hill; a brother, Larry Ray Cryer of Alamogordo, N.M., grandparents, Mrs. Altha Thomas and Mrs. C. E. Cryer of Fort Worth; and great-grandmothers, Mrs. Gerta Cranover and MRs. Emma Dunlap.
