William Darrell Dycus

William Darrell Dycus of Carrollton, Texas passed away on May 3, 2023,
at the age of 72. He was born on September 7, 1950, to William Claude
and Maudie Lee (Smith) Dycus in Dallas, Texas. Darrell grew up in
Farmers Branch, Texas and attended RL Turner High School. After high
school, he worked for Taylor Publishing in Dallas, while also picking up
jobs on the side, including working on cars, and even driving a wrecker
for his brother-in-law, Bobby, from time to time. In 1973, he started
with Halliburton, where he worked for the next 45 years.
Darrell artfully mastered the "work hard, play hard" motto. Ever loyal
to his craft, and most importantly the people he worked with and for,
his normal work week usually far exceeded the normal 40 hours. Working
nights, he worked hard to provide for his family; he took pride in his
outputs and honored his potential. But most importantly, wisely, he
balanced his life, ensuring he had time for family and fun.
Dirt track racing was one of his passions. He enjoyed the competition,
both witnessing it and directly competing in it. He especially loved the
camaraderie of the track community and loved sharing his hobby with his
family.
Never one to turn down an adventure, he was the first to say "yes" to
trying something new. It might have taken him 72 years, but Dad said
"yes" to sushi. And, though it might have felt like 65,000 hours on the
road, Dad said "yes" to the annual family road trips to Florida, where
he enjoyed drinking a cold one on the beach with his feet in the sand.
He said “yes” to countless other road trips, both near and far, to watch
his nephew pursue his own passion of dirt track racing. And, "yes" to
the trip to Colorado to ride ATVs in the mountains with his oldest
daughter and her friends.
Darrell really came into his own as grandfather, or "Papa" as he was
affectionately known. In addition to honing an uncanny ability to soothe
a crying baby, Papa said "yes" to basketball and baseball and Madden,
and countless games of dominoes, hot potato and Monopoly. He was always
up for playing doctor, or any imaginary-play. And, yes, he said "yes" to
dress-up parties, and Barbies.
His grandkids will tell you he never said "no." Though, surely, the
protective part of his big heart must have wanted to say "no" sometimes;
perhaps to removing the training wheels; or that
-too-fast-for-your-own-good car; or the boy asking out one of his
daughters on a first date. No doubt he felt the fear, right alongside
those he loved, but Darrell would say, "Make mistakes, you’ll learn from
them. Try it out. Take the shot. Chase that dream, I’ll support you."
And he was true to his word. His phone was always on, and he was ever
ready to talk, day or night. Simply put, Darrell was there when you
needed him.
Perhaps the very best gift he's left us with is the example he set
through the way he lived. Teaching through actions, never words, he
showed us the value in being generously kind, unwaveringly supportive
and fiercely loyal. He loved big and he loved strong, with all his
heart. He’s given us some big shoes to fill.
Darrell is survived by his daughters, Shannon Choate and husband, Kyle,
of Hennessey, Oklahoma. Nickole Dycus of Gunter, Texas and Jennifer Wade
of Allen, Texas; grandchildren, Russ, Ryan, Brenden, Ares and Circe;
great grandchildren, Rayne, Rogan and Max; brother, Tony Dycus; sisters,
Shirley Hackler and Suzie McClain; and a host of other loving family and
friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Archer Wade; parents, William
Claude Dycus and Maudie Lee (Smith) Dycus; brother, Edwin Rivers; and
sister, Sharon Bennett.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 8, 2023, at
