retired band director

Services for William "Bill" Dawson Jr., a former Dallas school district band
director, were Monday at Restland Memorial Chapel in Dallas.
Mr. Dawson, 81, died Friday at his home in Mesquite.
Burial was at Restland Cemetery in Dallas.
Mr. Dawson attended North Texas Teachers College and graduated in 1939. He then
went to work as the Carrollton High School band director.
During World War II, he moved to Beaumont to work in the shipyards as a quality
control manager.
In 1951, Mr. Dawson went back to teaching, working half-days at Wylie and Nevada
high schools. In 1957, he moved to Ferris High School. Mr. Dawson worked for the
Dallas Independent School District for nearly 15 years. He finished his teaching
career at Stockard Junior High School.
He also played for several local orchestras, spending 20 years with the Bill
Hummell Orchestra.
Mr. Dawson is survived by his wife, Glenn Dawson of Mesquite; sons William
Dawson III of Garland, David Dawson of Kansas City, Kan., and Ronald Dawson of
Heath, Texas; brother David Dawson of Denton; 20 grandchildren; and 16
great-grandchildren.
