CARROLLTON - Police are investigating the death of a Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District employee found fatally shot at his workplace Wednesday night.

Authorities said Todd Edward Fenton, 48, was working late at the CFBISD Service Center in the 1500 block of Randolph St. the night his body was found by a co-worker at about 11:20 p.m.

Fenton, a supervisor for the maintenance and landscaping department, worked with the district for 15 years. Co-workers are having a difficult time understanding why anyone would want to kill him.

Thursday, investigators spent the day searching for clues at the facility as day to day operations continued. Crisis counselors were called to the site to help "process the sudden and tragic" death, said Angela Shelley, a spokeswoman with Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD.

Carrollton police aren't saying much about the murder or whether Fenton knew the person who killed him. School district officials say it wasn't unusual for Fenton to be at the service center late at night.

"Things can come up at campuses at any time of the night," said Angela Shelley, a school district spokesperson. "A sprinkler system can break. There can be an issue with lawn care. They can be called in."

District officials said surveillance video would be handed over to authorities to aid in their investigation.

"We are cooperating fully with the police in their investigation," Shelley said. "So anything we have, we are turning over because we want to find justice for Todd Fenton."

Fenton's house illustrates the same landscaping skills he used as the lead supervising groundskeeper at the Carrollton-Farmers Branch School District. He oversaw maintenance of the district's stadiums, athletic fields, and 39 campuses.

"I'm shocked," said Sharon Roman, who lives down the street from Fenton. "I'm shocked because he did seem like such a nice person."

A sign on Fenton's front door asked for privacy, and praised the 48-year-old man as a kind and generous person who will be greatly missed.

Carrollton police told News 8 it's too early in their investigation to release further details.
