In
Memory of
Darren Brian Flatt
May 15, 1963 - May 25, 2016Darren Brian Flatt was born on May
15, 1963 in Waco, Tx to Curtis and Carol Flatt who already had sister
Lisa. In 1966, the family moved to Richardson, Tx and welcomed brother
Logan in 1969. The next year, the happy family took the long, 5-mile
journey to settle in Farmers Branch, Tx. There, Darren played soccer for
many years in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch soccer league, was an active
member of the Boy Scouts, and enjoyed early-morning hunting with his dad
in the undeveloped fields of North Texas. Darren went to Janie Stark
Elementary, Vivian Field Middle School and graduated from R.L. Turner
High School in December of 1980. After high school, Darren moved back to
Waco to live with his grandparents while he attended Texas State
Technical Institute. During that time he drove a 1967 VW bug, which had
to be towed many times to his grandparents' house to be fixed in
whatever way possible. He received his associates degree in Computer
Science and returned to Dallas to work.
In 1982, Darren decided to resume his college work at North Texas State
University in Denton, Texas, making many new friends on the second floor
of McConnell Hall. His roommate Monte played guitar and they would call
everyone to the dining hall "let's eat". He drove a gold Maverick
nicknamed the "Golden Rocket". He graduated cum laude with a degree in
accounting and went to work as an auditor for Arthur Andersen. While he
worked at Andersen, Darren successfully passed the tests to earn the
Certified Public Accountant professional designation. He met his future
wife through a mutual friend while they were all attending a UNT
football game in Austin.
Tina and Darren were married on Oct. 27, 1990. Their daughter Savannah
was born in 1995 and their son Andrew was born in 2001. A true native
son of Texas, Darren loved Big Red and Dr. Pepper, especially the pure
cane sugar variety from Dublin, Texas. He enjoyed road trips all around
the state, including one to Big Bend National park where he and Tina
crossed into Boquillas, Mexico on a rowboat and drank cervezas at the
local cantina. Darren had a creative eye, taking photographs of flowers
and old cars and interesting signs found on the side roads of his
travels. He enjoyed cooking on his grill, and was always experimenting
to find the perfect "bark" on his smoked brisket. "I just can't get it
like they do at Marshall's he would say." He was a problem solver and
enjoyed tinkering around on the old cars he purchased and brought home,
including the 1964 Skylark convertible, the 1954 Volkswagen pickup
truck, and the 1974 Javelin. In between car purchases, Darren took his
family on many vacations and was blessed greatly with the Pizza Night
camp outs, birthday parties and holiday celebrations. As an accounting
professional, Darren worked in downtown Dallas at Zane May Properties
for several years. He later joined Halliburton in its HCT Global Finance
division based in Carrollton where he worked diligently as an Accounting
Supervisor for more than 19 years. Darren's family appreciates the
kindness and support of so many people during this time. Darren is
survived by his wife Christina, daughter Savannah, and son Andrew,
parents Curtis and Carol Flatt, his older sister Lisa and husband Keith
Huffman, niece Kristen Avans, nephew Bradley Huffman his younger brother
Logan, his in-laws Leon and Dora Best, Stephen Best, and David Best.
Donations can be made to a college scholarship fund for Savannah and AJ.
