Former Cameron standout running for U.S. House in Texas
By Kim McConnell [email protected] Dec 29, 2019

Cameron University graduate Richard Fleming has filed to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in Texas Congressional District 24, located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Fleming graduated from Cameron with a bachelor of business administration and masters of business administration in 1991 and 1998, respectively. He attended Cameron on a football scholarship and was a member of Cameron’s 1987 NAIA Football National Championship team.

He said six generations of his family have lived in the North Texas Congressional District. His great grandfather lived in Addison, Texas, on Addison Road when there was small African-American community in the 1960s.

“My great-grandfather was the groundskeeper for Clint Murchison Jr., who was the founder and first owner of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys,” he said.

Fleming grew up in Farmers Branch, Texas, and lives in Carrollton, a neighboring city where he graduated from R.L. Turner High. He was encouraged to attend Cameron University by his long-time boss and mentor Frank Rush, who owned Sandy Lake Park in Carrollton, Texas. Rush was the former owner of Craterville Park, which was located in the Wichita Mountains near Lawton.

“I think it is safe to say that we are all getting tired of the division and aggression of elections,” Fleming said. “I think we all have a shared vision that there is a lot more that unites our North Texas community than divides it, and that’s how I intend to focus my campaign on things that matter to us all such as affordable healthcare with preexisting condition, great schools, good jobs and a vibrant community.

“My life growing up here in North Texas has truly been a living, breathing example of the American Dream. From my earliest years living in Tower Lane Housing projects and on food stamps to becoming a nationally recognized business owner as well as respected community leader, I am so thankful for the education and opportunities that have led me to where I am today.”

Fleming has been serving North Texas for 23 years. He served three terms on the Carrollton-Farmers Branch School Board, leading an initiative in 2012 to increase school funding by $20 million. He also has served on local, state and national boards, where he has been an advocate for school funding and small business.

Fleming is the founder and CEO of State Tax Group, LLC, a state and local tax practice that helps business mitigate state and local task risks.
