OBITUARY Mrs Furneaux, Rancher's Widow, Dies in
Hospital Mrs. John L. Furneaux, 78, of 4209 Beverly
Drive, widow of a noted Dallas rancher, died Wednesday in a Dallas
hospital after a short illness.
Mrs. Furneaux, the former Mattie Worthington, was born in Dallas County
Oct. 16, 1879, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Floyd Worthington.
Her father, a pioneer rancher, had come to the community of New Hope
from Mississippi in 1866.
Mrs. Furneaux attended old Kidd Key College at Sherman, and on Oct 7,
1897, married John Furneaux, who was noted for bringing scientific
farming to Texas. He died in 1950.
Mrs. Furneaux was a member of the Dallas Women's Club, the Marianne
Scruggs Garden Club, and the Lakeside Browning Club. She was a long-time
member of the Highland Park Methodist Church.
Survivors are two sons, Fred Furneaux of Dallas and John L. Furneaux Jr
of Houston; a brother, Hugh Worthington of Frisco; a sister, Mrs. J. C.
Olsen of Frisco and a granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Sparkman's
Funeral Chapel, 2115 Ross, by the Rev. William H. Dickinson Jr., pastor
of Highland Park Methodist Church. Burial will be in the
Furneaux family cemetery.
Pallbearers will be William H. Furneaux, William L. Furneaux, H. T.
Worthington, William Duls, Sidney Greene, William Worthington, William
Worthington Marshall Jr. and Harry Williams. The Dallas Morning
