OBITUARY Local Boy Reported Killed In Korean
Fight
Mrs. Amanda Mae Gober of Carrollton was informed by the Secretary of the
Army on Oct. 11 that her son, Pfc. Arvle G. Gober, 18, was killed in action in
Korea. There were no other details at the time.
Gober had been in the U.S. Army since Oct. 5, 1950. He left for overseas
duty on Feb. 28, 1951 and was assigned to Co. B. of the 23rd Infantry Regiment,
Second Division.
It is believed that Gober was killed during the 31-day battle of Heartbreak
Ridge. The Associated Press reported last Friday that it was the 23rd Infantry
Regiment of the 2nd Division with the help of the French Volunteer Battalion who
to9ok the ridge after an all-night battle. Gober was killed in action on Sept.
23, the Secretary of the Army said.
During the month-long battle the AP reported that some companies almost
disappeared. Some battalions were cut down to little more than companies. It was
reported that the four-mile ridge battle probably was the costliest Allied
regimental attack of the entire Korean War.
Pfc. Gober would have been 19 years old this month.
Survivors besides his mother are: his father, Leonard Gober of Lewisville; three
brothers, Pvt. Leonard O. Gober, Jr., U.S. Army, Aberdeen, Md., James and Billy,
of Carrollton; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Rush, Commerce, and Mrs. Lillie
Gober of Dallas; an aunt, Mrs. P. G. Harper, McKinney, Texas
