Margaret Jane Hamilton
Born: January 22, 1921
Died: April 27, 2015

Jane Hamilton, a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, passed away in Denton April 27, 2015 at age 94. She was born in Dallas, TX to Walter E. and Sarah E. (Thorp) Merrell on January 22, 1921. Raised on a farm originally settled by her grandparents in Dallas’ Walnut Hill area, Jane learned the meaning of hard work. She appreciated the land and animals that provided their food and income, as well as the importance of developing close relationships with extended family and friends. She attended Walnut Hill School and graduated from Carrollton High School in 1938.
Jane married Donald W. Hamilton at Cochran Chapel Methodist Church in Dallas on July 3, 1941. Donald preceded her in death in March, 2005. Jane worked as a dental assistant prior to Donald’s joining the U.S. Army during World War II. During the war they lived in Arkansas, California and Maryland with Jane taking clerical jobs, usually at the Army Post wherever Don was stationed. After Donald was honorably discharged from the Army, they returned to Texas, making Denton their home.
As a young mother, Jane participated in The Twilight Garden Club, Sam Houston P.T.A. and served as a Cub Scout Den Mother while her sons were in scouting. After her youngest child began elementary school, Jane enrolled at Texas Woman’s University and received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1966. She first taught in Sanger in the then new Head Start program and as a reading teacher. She spent the remainder of her career teaching at Sam Houston and Frank Forman Elementary schools in Denton, retiring in 1986.
Jane was a long time member of Denton’s First United Methodist Church where she enjoyed her United Methodist Women mission group. She and Don were active in the Bungalow class and as part of The Trippers until moving to The Vintage. She also held memberships in The Denton Classroom Teachers Assoc., Women’s Shakespeare Club Modern Arts Department and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Jane enjoyed traveling, tending to her houseplants, caring for her family and pets, and hosting friends and family for gatherings. One of the greatest joys, long anticipated by her and Donald, was the arrival of each of the three grandchildren. Each child developed a special relationship with Nana and PaPa.
Jane is survived by her son Jeff Hamilton, daughter Lynne and husband Gay Leake, and grandchildren J.J. Hamilton, Sally Hamilton and husband Alex Martinez, and Casey and wife Katelyn Leake. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald, son Michael, son Jeff’s wife Janet, and her sister Betty and husband Maurice Schnorr.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00a.m. on Saturday May 2, 2015 in the Chapel of Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust St., Family visitation will be just after the service.
Memorials may be made to Denton School Foundation, Inc. or to a charity of choice. The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the staff at The Vintage who cared for her as if she were their own since 2004 when she moved there.
