Mildred K. Helms FORNEY - Mildred K. Helms, 78, a retired executive director of secondary education for Arlington ISD, died at home Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006, in Forney, surrounded by her family. Service: 12:30 a.m. Tuesday in Moore Funeral Chapel. Burial: Moore Memorial Gardens. Dr. Helms was the daughter of Elmira Pfullmann and George J. Kunkel. She was born Jan. 8, 1928, in Falls City. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, reared in Poth and graduated from Poth High School as valedictorian in 1945. She married Joseph D. Helms on Dec. 25, 1945. She graduated with a bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Houston in 1958, a master's in guidance from the University of North Texas in 1968 and a Ph.D. in administrative leadership in 1985. Dr. Helms taught school in Carrollton for three years; then the family moved to Arlington. She joined the Arlington school district in 1961 as a teacher in Arlington High School and helped to open Sam Houston High. The following year, she returned to AHS as a counselor for 10 years, assistant principal for four years and then as executive director of secondary education at the district administration building for 10 years, and retired in 1988. During her professional career, Dr. Helms was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Delta Kappa Gamma, Texas and American Association of Counselors and Texas Association of Secondary School Principals. Dr. Helms' greatest loves were her husband, who preceded her in death Dec. 17, 1991, and her family. Constant in her faith, she attended the Lutheran church all her life and respected and cared greatly for the students of AISD.
