In
Memory of
Alvino "Al" Herrera
March 8, 1951 - June 17, 2016Alvino F. Herrera was born on
March 8, 1951 in Seguin, Texas to Hilario "Laredo" Herrera & Socorro "Soco"
Flores Herrera. He was the eldest of five children who grew up in
Dallas. Alvino, attended R.L. Turner High School, then joined the U.S.
Army. He proudly served our country during the Vietnam War. He was a
Green Beret, Airborne Ranger 82 Battalion part of the Special Forces,
the "Black Iguanas". "Bear" received this nickname during the Army, as
he snored like a bear. His family, then started to call him "Bear", not
only for his snoring, but for his stature. This era of his life was
unknown to many, as he didn't talk much about it. His parents were, and
our family is, very proud of our soldier, none the less, and we are
truly grateful for his dedicated service for our freedom.
After the Army, he pursued a career as a logistics manager for UPS, then
later for Essilor. Al retired in 2011, but found retirement too boring,
so he started his own business in lawn and fence services as well as
worked part-time at Target.
Al was the life the party. He loved to joke around, give you a hard time
and if he liked you, he'd give you a nick-name. He also had a stern and
serious side as well. He enjoyed being with family and friends, cooking
out, listening to music, watching a good game and trying his luck at the
casinos in Oklahoma. He was our father, brother, husband, uncle and
friend and will be missed tremendously.
On Friday, June 17, 2016, Al Herrera was called Home, and ended his
battle with liver cancer. He was greeted in Heaven by his parents, "Mom
& Pop", his brother, Sylverio "Kiddo", and his brother-in-law Steve,
step-son Danny.
His life will continue to be remembered and celebrated by his wife, Pat
Martinez; his sons: Uly Herrera (Andrea) & Marcos Herrera (Susana);
step-daughter Stephanie Escobar (Hector); his sisters: Rosario Sanchez &
Natalia Davis (David); his brother Thomas Herrera; grandchildren and
many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
