RODNEY C. 'ROD' HOOVER - Teacher with many interests
Dallas Morning News, The (TX) - Thursday, August 26, 2004
Author: JOE SIMNACHER, Staff Writer

Rodney C. "Rod" Hoover had a wide array of interests and skills from woodworking to target shooting. He trained to be a concert pianist but taught math and computer science in high schools in Lancaster, Carrollton and McKinney.

Mr. Hoover, 57, died Sunday of multiple health problems at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. today at Restland Funeral Home's Wildwood Chapel, 9220 Restland Road. Burial will be in Restland Memorial Park.

Born in Lubbock, he grew up in West Texas and graduated from Shallowater High School in 1965. He received a bachelor's degree in applied music from Texas Tech University in 1969.

"He was studying to be a concert pianist," said his wife, Martha Ann Hoover of Dallas.

Mr. Hoover served in the Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Wasp but did not see combat, his wife said. After being discharged from the Navy in 1971, Mr. Hoover returned to Texas Tech, where he received his master's degree in music in 1974. He later taught music for three years in Odessa. He was music director for St. Mary's Catholic Church and School, where he taught piano, his wife said.

"He told me the most enjoyable experience he had was when he taught for the three years at St. Mary's," Mrs. Hoover said.

Mr. Hoover next worked in construction in California, where his first wife attended school, Mrs. Hoover said. There weren't many teaching jobs available at the time, so he worked in building trades. The couple later divorced.

"He did many things; he was talented and knowledgeable in many areas," his wife said.

In 1984, Mr. Hoover returned to Texas, where he was certified to teach math and computer science.

Mr. Hoover taught high school computer science and math in Lancaster for 11 years before moving to R. L. Turner High School in Carrollton to focus on technology.

He began working hard to advance the levels of high school technology education, said his daughter Raina Hoover of Dallas.

"He was really pushing for more and more advanced education for high school kids and getting them better prepared for careers in technology," she said.

Mr. Hoover most recently taught high school in McKinney, his daughter said. He retired in December.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Hoover is survived by another daughter, Lorien Hoover of Dallas; his mother, Daurene Hoover of Amarillo; and a brother, Doyle Hoover of Amarillo.
