OBITUARY Another of Dallas County's old
settlers and farmers gone to rest. L. H. Hudigns, loved and respected by
everyone who knew him, departed this life Tuesday evening August 6, 1923, after
a lingering illness of many months.
The end came not unexpected, the children had been called to his bedside. In him
they lost a good father and the community a good citizen.
Mr. Hudgins was born on November 27, 1845; he was in his 98th year when he died.
He was an old Confederate Veteran and was wounded in the battle of Shiloh.
He married Caroline Geetgood. In 1885 he moved to Dallas County, where he
engaged in farming while rearing a large family.
Twenty one years go, in 1902, Mrs. Hudgins, the faithful wife and mother was
torn from his side in death, praying to the last for her husband and children.
That same year Mr. Hudgins was converted under the preaching of Dr. Truitt in a
revival at Farmers Branch. He did not till recently join a church and while he
was the kindliest, mildest man and always made you feel that he was your friend,
yet he was so reserved and disinclined to talk about himself that few people
knew much about his private and his spiritual life.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. L. P. Smith, well known here, the man
who 21 years ago laid away the life companion of the deceased. Interment took
place the Farmers Branch Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. August 7, 1923.
Surviving Mr. Hudgins are three sons and two daughters, William, James and
Lee
Hudgins, Mrs. Mollie Vandergriff and Mrs. Callie Hastings.
