Ginny Ivey 1946 - 2011
Ginny Ivey, a longtime member of this group [[email protected]],
passed away recently. For those of you who didn't know of her, Ginny was a blues
singer/manager/promoter who helped keep the blues alive at a time when blues
music in general was on hard times. Thank goodness, Stevie Ray Vaughn and his
brother Jimmie's Fabulous Thunderbirds came along and made the blues a
mainstream music style. However, Texas blues wouldn't be as big as it is today
without very important people like Ginny. At the time of her death, Ginny hosted
a series of blues jams at The Cottage Lounge on Northwest Highway in Dallas. In
her memory, a jam will be held there April 9th. Numerous long-time Dallas-area
musicians will play and if you want to see the best talent you may or may not
have heard of, this will be the place and time. Ginny touched the lives of a lot
of people and her life will be celebrated as she would want - wailing the blues.
I never met Ginny, but through our contacts online, she never stopped trying to
help our band get gigs - even though it wouldn't make her a dime. There will be
a lot of musicians there who knew her better and are more talented than I, and
they'll be the ones jamming, but I'll be there holding down a chair with my rear
end and toasting Ginny's name.
I don't know about a cover charge or even if there is one, but I doubt it will
be much. I don't think Ginny would have wanted it to be expensive. The Cottage
Lounge will know, so call them beforehand. Ginny was proud of being an R L Turner
grad and would never tire of chatting about FB/Carrollton. Ginny had an amazing
memory of our area during the 60's. So I invite you celebrate her memory, stomp
your hands, and clap your feet to some of the best playing you'll ever see.
