Services set today for Bennett James Jr., retired Farmers Branch police captain

Services for Bennett Martin James Jr., a retired Farmers Branch police captain, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham. Burial will follow at Forest Grove Cemetery in Telephone, Texas.

Mr. James, 64, died of cancer Saturday at his Telephone home.

He worked in the Farmers Branch Police Department from 1959 to 1988 and retired as head of the patrol division.

During his law enforcement career, Mr. James never thought of moving to a big-city police department, said his wife, Alice James.

"We lived in Farmers Branch, and he really enjoyed small-town police work," she said. "He always wanted to stay there."

After retiring, the couple moved to Telephone.

Mr. James was named Farmers Branch Policeman of the Year and served as president of the North Texas Juvenile Officers Association.

He also is survived by his daughter, Mary Edge of San Diego, Calif.; a son, Bennett M. James III of The Colony; his mother, Lavada James of Farmers Branch; and four grandchildren.
