OBITUARY
John Johnston
John Epps Johnston, 71, lifelong resident of Carrollton-Farmers Branch,
died Thursday, Jan. 25, 1990 at Trinity Medical Center, Carrollton, after a long
illness.
Mr. Johnston was born Nov. 21, 1918, the youngest son of James E. and Maude
Perry Johnston. He is descended from four pioneer families of the Peters Colony;
Perry, Poor, Johnston and Longmire. His maternal great-grandfather,
A. W. Perry,
was the founder of Carrollton and his paternal great-grandfather, Charles
Longmire, was the first postmaster of Farmers Branch.
Mr. Johnston was a graduate of Carrollton High School Class of 1936 and attended
Texas A&M University. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a
longtime employee of the Coca-Cola Co. and retired in 1968 after 31 years of
service. He later was a custom home builder until 1984.
He had been a very active member of the Masonic Lodge for 49 years. He was past
master of the James A. Smith Lodge 395 AF&AM in Farmers Branch and the Dallas
Scottish Rite bodies. He was also an active member the past 35 years of Farmers
Branch Chapter 687, O.E.S., where he had served as past patron. For the
past 60 years he was a member of the Baptist church, originally at First Baptist
Church in Carrollton and alter at Northway Baptist Church in Dallas.
He was married May 5, 1950 to the former Mary K. "Kathy" Vance of Waco in a
ceremony at Lambert Gardens on Turtle Creek in Dallas, a popular site for
weddings 40 years ago. Mrs. Johnston, who had served as Worthy Grand
Matron of O.E.S. of Texas, died in 1985. He was also preceded in death by his
parents and a brother, Perry Johnston.
Survivors include a son, John Vance Johnston of Boerne; a daughter, Jane
Johnston Adams of Carrollton; a brother, Earl Wilson Johnston of San Antonio;
sisters-in-law Maurice V. Johnston of San Antonio and Lila V. Butler of Chino,
Calif.; six grandchildren, two nephews and a niece.
The funeral was conducted Monday at Northway Baptist Church, Dallas. Earl W.
Johnston and Frank Ashley officiated. Burial was in Garden of Mount Vernon,
Restland Memorial Park under the auspices of James A. Smith Masonic Lodge.
Pallbearers were Bob Curry, Milburn Gravley, Tom Hill, Robby Seidel, Cecil
Wilder and Billy Wilson.
