OBITUARY MR. MARION JOHNSON BURIED SUNDAY
A large gathering of friends from several communities witnessed the burial
Sunday of Mr. Marion Johnson at Farmers Branch, Rev. Smith officiating.
Mr. Johnston came to this section in 1854 with his brother J. A. Johnston
and bought land, part of which is his present homestead on which he has lived
sixty-two years, and for which was paid $3.50 per acre.
He experienced many privations of the pioneer and was wounded in the Civil
War. The two brothers, before dividing their property, ran an old style gin, the
power being furnished at first by oxen and later by mules. They were
robbed once Jim Longmire and Mark Ellision intercepted the robbers and one was
killed.
He was a strong exponent of thrift and education. Though he was not of a
sociable turn nevertheless many understood him and were such friends they have
regrets with the relatives. He leaves a brother, Isaac, his wife, Mrs.
Elizabeth Johnston, two accomplished daughters, Mary and Ava, and three
successful sons, Ben, Tom and Bob, the latter two being married. His death at
the age of 88 is attributed to an affection of the stomach which lasted only a
few days.
