MEMORIAL SERVICE
Calvin Lamoyne King, Jr.
September 9, 1944 - January 28, 2022
Calvin Lamoyne King Jr. was born September 9th, 1944 in Topeka, Kansas to Calvin Lamoyne King Sr and Jane Laurent King.
His early days were spent in Kansas and East Texas where he grew a passion for reading and the outdoors.
He graduated from Turner High School where he met Tom Howard and forged a friendship. Together the would fish and hunt, until as Tom puts it "we thought we shouldn't be killing animals."
Calvin turned to photography with the goal of becoming a professional wildlife photographer for National Geographic. He left thousands of beautiful slides of flowers and landscapes. But none of himself or people.
He nurtured his father through the painful process of dementia until his death.
Calvin was a man of few words, self-reliant, complex, and brilliant man who kept to himself. Living his life quietly and without complaint. He could be seen walking to the store or to church and often refused to accept offers of a ride, except from James Wilson. James would take him to the store after services on Sunday.  Allowing James to wait for him while he shopped and then take him home.
Calvin faithful attended services at Valwood Baptist Church, where he was a long-time member. For the last two years he attended a small Sunday school class. He would ask some of the most interesting and provocative questions in his search for the deeper meaning and understanding of the scriptures.
He passed away on January 28, 2022 at his home. sitting in his favorite chair.
We will remember Calvin each Sunday coming to church in his handsome suits, complete with bowties, and decorative chains, and topped off with a matching pocket handkerchief.
Calvin's presence in our congregation and Sunday school will be missed, but we know he is forever with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
