Glenda Kirk dies; graveside services set for today
Glenda Ann Bishop Kirk, a Carrollton teacher, died Monday of complications from
multiple sclerosis, which was diagnosed in 1964. She was 66.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Restland Memorial Park in
Dallas.
"Teaching is what she loved most," said her son, Keith Kirk of Houston. "She was
more upset with having to leave teaching rather than being diagnosed."
Mrs. Kirk, granddaughter of one of the five first families to settle in
Carrollton, graduated from Carrollton High School, now R. L. Turner High School,
in 1951. She received her education degree at North Texas State University, now
the University of North Texas, in 1954.
Mrs. Kirk taught business skills such as typing and shorthand at R. L. Turner
for nearly six years.
Her husband, Bill Kirk, said her former teacher,
Mary B. Dent, handpicked her to
head the business department at R. L. Turner. And many of her students visited
her at home, he recalled.
"Three students told her that she had inspired them to be teachers," Mr. Kirk
said.
Keith Kirk said family members believe she fought her ailment as long as she
could, hoping to see the birth of a grandchild due in September.
"Multiple sclerosis doesn't get the publicity that other diseases get," he said.
"It's crippling, and it changes the way you live your life."
In addition to her husband and son, Mrs. Kirk is survived by a daughter, Karen
Russell of Carrollton; a brother, Dr. Alan Bishop of Arlington; and three
grandsons.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dallas Chapter of the National
Multiple Sclerosis Society, 8750 N. Central Expressway, Dallas, Texas 75231.
