Sudden death of popular Carrollton student is a mystery
by TODD UNGER
CARROLLTON — More than 200 family and friends gathered at Newman Smith
High School on Sunday night to remember the life of Gerson Lagunez, 16, a
standout student, cross-country star and band member.
The junior died late Friday afternoon after playing frisbee.
Described as charming and always a "giver," the candle light vigil on Sunday
gave those who knew the young man best an opportunity to remember him.
"All of you have stories with him," said Xiadani Lagunez, Gerson's sister.
Gerson had just finished up playing a game of Ultimate Frisbee at a park off
Keller Springs Road, when he suddenly collapsed on the walk home.
The teen's father told News 8 Gerson had a heart murmur, and they think that may
have played a factor. Autopsy results are still pending.
"He touched a lot of lives," said Gerson's father, Enoc Lagunez. "He was a very
good Christian and a very good son. We are so proud of him."
Enoc said his son was dedicated to helping others and showed pictures of a
recent mission trip to the Caribbean.
A memorial service is slated for Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at 2700 Christian
Parkway in Farmers Branch.
Grief counselors will be on hand at the high school all week long.

unexpectedly

A well-known and
well-liked Newman High School junior collapsed and died
Friday afternoon while walking home from a game of
Ultimate Frisbee at a Carrollton park.
Gerson Lagunez, 16, was remembered at a candlelight
vigil attended by more than 200 people Sunday night at
the high school, and again at a memorial service Tuesday
night at the Cornerstone Christian Church in Farmers
Branch.
The candlelight service was held on the high school
parking lot where band practice is often held.
Family members said he had a heart murmur which may
have been the cause of his death. However, results of an
autopsy were pending.
Gerson, who was a band member and ran cross-country, was
described by both adults and students as an outstanding
person who excelled in academics, sports and music.
Several at the memorial services remembered him as a
Christian who had a strong faith.
He played the trombone in the band, was on the honor
roll and was an active member at his church.
Joe Pouncy, Newman High School principal, described him
as an outstanding student and person.
