Sky-Diver Lathem Drowns In Mishap:
Harmon Sidney Lathem, 30, formerly of Carrollton, drowned Sunday at 4:30
p.m. in a freak sky-diving accident at Dickinson, between Houston and Galveston.
Lathem, who had been sky-diving since 1963, when he was discharged from the Air
Force, landed in a water-filled sandpit and drowned despite efforts to
resuscitate him. He had suffered an old shoulder injury which may have figured
in his inability to save himself in the water.
Born in Dallas, he lived in the Carrollton area until two years ago, and
attended R.L. Turner High School [Actually
Carrollton High School, Class of 1959]
He was employed in Houston by Texas Instruments, for which he also worked while
living in Carrollton.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Rhoton, Weiland-Merritt
Chapel, the Rev. George Holden officiating. Burial was in Restland Memorial
Park.
Survivors: One son, Mark Christian Lathem, 8, of Houston; his parents, Dick
Lathem of Lake Dallas and Mrs. Anne Norvell of Dallas; three sisters, Mrs. Jo
McClain of Pasadena, Mrs. Joyce Anderson of Farmers Branch, and Mrs. Hulene
