OBITUARY

Shirley Long

Shirley Carole Long, born January 1, 1936, passed away on Wednesday, December 30th at Methodist Hospital in Midlothian.
She was born and raised in the Dallas area; her ancestors settled the Hackberry Community in 1879. Later the settlement was incorporated into Coppell & subsequently into Las Colinas (Irving). Shirley graduated from Carrollton High School in Carrollton, Tx where she was a drum majorette. She met the love of her life, Lamon D. Long, during high school and they married in 1953.
Long-time residents of Navarro County, the couple originally settled in Barry, TX where they purchased 250 acres to engage in ranching. Over the years, Longbranch Cattle Co. provided many steers for local youngsters in the 4H programs in Navarro County- including her grandchildren Matthew & Maygie. The couple also founded a custom home building business in 1982 called Long Construction Corp. and a commercial pier drilling business called Long Foundation Drilling Corp. Shirley retired as Treasurer of Long Foundation Drilling.
Shirley was an active member of ABWA (American Business Women of America) over the years, during which time she held carious offices. She was especially proud of her support for the organization's scholarship program for young women.
Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Lamon D. Long, her mother, Charlotte Leola Colwell and her father, Remi Jackson Colwell.
Shirley was survived by 3 children, Lamont Long Petersen, Charles David Long & Steven Wesley Long; 5 grandchildren Peter Petersen, Matthew Long, Kyle Long, Maygie Stallings & Katherine Long. She also leaves behind 7 great grandchildren, her sister Jeanne McLarty of Albuquerque, NM and her brother John Lee Colwell of Saginaw, TX.
A service will be planned for a later date.
