OBITUARY
 
Charles A. Lyles
January 23, 1937 - August 31, 2021

Charles A. Lyles, age 84 of Terrell, TX, passed away at home to be with our Lord on August 31, 2021, from complications of a stroke. He was surrounded by family.
Charlie was born to Charles E. Lyles and Mattie Wynne Lyles on January 23, 1937 in Dallas, TX. He lost his mother at age 7.
Leola Taylor Lyles entered his life as a step mother who nurtured and helped raise him to become the great man he was. He was also nurtured by the extended Wynne family.
He was raised in Garland, TX where he played sports and graduated from Garland High School in 1955. He attended Kilgore Junior College on a football scholarship. It was there that he met his sweetheart, Anne Gause. He transferred to East Texas State University to continue playing football. While there, he married Anne then continued on to graduate with a both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in 1960.
Charlie devoted 32 years of his life to coaching, teaching math, and touching the lives of young people. He started his coaching career at Mineola as head coach and athletic director, and also welcoming his daughter Deanne. He next moved to Dennison as assistant coach and welcomed his son Jon. Soon after, he continued on to Lancaster as head coach and athletic director.
He also coached at UT Arlington as an assistant. He went to Pasadena as head coach at Sam Rayburn High School and R L Turner in Carrollton as head coach. During his coaching years he won several district championships, and was selected as Coach of the Year several times as well as being inducted into the ETSU Hall of Fame. He counted among his friends all the players he coached through the years and fellow coaches all over Texas. Charlie was blessed to have a career he loved, but most of all, he loved the kids and fellow coaches.
He was also known for his love of family, hunting and fishing. Charlie loved to brag about his children. He always worked it into the conversation. His gift of story telling delighted his friends and family. His ability to share his experiences touched many different generations.
After retirement he entered the adventure of raising and running race horses. After that he loved and raised cattle.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 64 years Anne Gause Lyles. Two children, daughter Deanne Lyles-Olson and Larry Olson and son Jon Lyles and Shanna Lyles. Charlie is also survived by two loyal friends and coaching buddies, Mike Venable and AI Campo, with the fourth member of the group, Fred Matthew, watching from heaven. He will be missed by an endless number of friends from all walks of life.

There will be a private burial at Restland Dallas on Sept. 29. A celebration of life will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Terrell, 503 W. College Street, on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 11:00 a.m.
