OBITUARY
Mrs. J. H. Mathis
Resident of Dallas County For 83 Years Dies at Home
Mrs. Susan Jackson Mathis, widow of the late Capt. James H. Mathis, died
Tuesday morning at her home, 4825 Reiger avenue. She was born April 3, 1846, in
Devonshire, England, and came to Dallas County in 1848 with her father and
mother, John and Mary Jackson, who
were among the first pioneers in Dallas County. Their family consisted of the
following children: John Jackson, Capt. William Jackson, Mrs. Mary Ann Dudley,
Mrs. Fannie Furneaux, Mrs. J. H. Mathis and Frank Jackson Sr. Of this
family all have died except Frank Jackson Sr., who resides at 5536 Tremont
street.
Mrs. Mathis was married to Capt James H. Mathis Dec. 28, 1865. Of
four children John M. and Mattie have died. Miss Flora Mathis and Arthur Mathis
survive. She is also survived by the following grandchildren: James D. Mathis,
Mrs. Lamham Connor, Miss Julia Mathis, Miss Mildred Mathis, all of Dallas, and
Morris Mathis of St. Louis.
Mrs. Mathis early in life joined Cochran's Chapel Methodist Church, Dallas,
where she was a consistent member. She was one of the leading factors in the
early camp meetings which were held north of Dallas and largely attended many
years ago.
Funeral services will be held at the home at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev.
George Gibson, assisted by the Rev. J. J. Morgan and the Rev. L. P. Smith, will
conduct the services. Burial will be in the family lot in Oakland Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be J. H. Furneaux, Will Ball, J. L. Jackson, Andrew Jackson, W.
R. Everett and T. G. Oldham.
