Shirley
Mae Menasco
MAY 22, 1932 – DECEMBER 11, 2021
Shirley Mae Menasco died peacefully in her sleep on December 11,
2021, at the age of 89.
She was born on May 22, 1932, in Omaha Nebraska to parents
Floyd, Sr. and Martha (Geist) Hanson. She was raised in Edgar
NE, Madison NE, Lincoln NE, and Commerce TX. She attended the
Training School at East Texas State Teachers College for two
years, and then Commerce High School her junior and senior
years. She attended college at East Texas State majoring in
business and music. Here she met and married J.D. Menasco in
1953.
As a coach’s wife, they began their life together in Commerce.
After they finished school, they moved to Mineola TX. Other
moves included Spring Hill, Texas City, Carrollton/Farmers
Branch, Midland, Jacksonville, and Tyler. Upon retirement, they
moved to Cedar Creek Country Club, in Kemp.
Shirley taught elementary music for 30 years across the state of
Texas. She was well known for her creative school choir programs
and was adored by her many students. She sang and played piano
for her Methodist Church choirs, and once served as choir
director.
Shirley was a devoted wife, attending innumerable basketball
games, with kids in tow. She and J.D. were steadfast partners.
She faithfully supported his career which included moving the
family around the state. Shirley was a devoted mother to her
three children, Rick, Patty, and Jan. She inspired her family to
love and appreciate music. She faithfully attended many sporting
and school events. Most importantly, she encouraged her children
to be compassionate, honest, and just.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband J.D. Menasco, her
parents, Floyd and Martha Hanson, mother and father-in-law
Arthur and Lena Menasco, brother, Floyd Hanson Jr.,
sister-in-laws Lawanda Hanson (Ansley), and Dolores Hanson
(Wilson), Sarah Richards (Newton), brother-in-law A.B. Menasco,
and daughter-in-law Mary Menasco (Garrett).
Shirley is survived by her brother Roger Hanson, children, Rick
Menasco, Patty and husband Cary (Tanamachi), Jan and husband
Mark (Thomas), grandchildren Cole Menasco and wife Samantha,
Lauren Terpenine Day and husband Andrew, Brittany Leard Smith
and husband Dan, Jefferson Leard, Matt Thomas and wife Shannon,
Jerri Thomas Middleton and husband Stephen, Clay Thomas, and
wife Mallory, and numerous great grandchildren.
