OBITUARY Plano woman,
two children die in crash
By Mark Miller
A-41-year-old Plano woman and two small children were killed and two other
youngsters were injured critically Wednesday afternoon when their car and a
semitrailer truck collided, Plano police said.
Annette Neill, 41, had been baby-sitting her own son and three other children
and was driving them to a nursery school about 3 p.m. Wednesday, a spokesman for
Plano General Hospital said.
Mrs. Neill had just turned left from Plano Parkway onto Custer Road when her car
was struck by the truck police said.
Mrs. Neill and Mark Keene Jr., 18 months, were dead at the scene, police said.
Her son, Shaneheath, 4, died about 8 p.m. at Plano General Hospital.
The other two children were Larry Owens, 2, who was in critic condition in the
intensive care unit with multiple injuries, and Chuck Schaefer, 4 who was in
critical condition after under going more than three hours of surgery Wednesday
night.
Mark was the son of Mark and Mary Keene, of 2612 Northcrest Dr. Plano, Larry
lives with his grandfather and guardian, James N. Dozier, 6501 Mesquite Trail,
Plano, And Chuck is the son of Michael Schaefer, 3528 Marwick Dr., Plano.
The driver of the truck, Jessie Smith, 26, of McKinney received a slight injury
to his right ankle but did not require treatment officials said.
Plano police traffic investigator Sammy Knapp said Mrs. Neill had been
baby-sitting the three children and her son, Shaneheath, at her home at 1212
Quail Drive, Plano.
She was on her way to the Canyon Creek Christian Academy in Richardson when the
crash occurred Knapp said. The parents of the other three children were to pick
them up at the school, he said.
Two of Mrs. Neills children, a 3-year old and a 4-year old, also were at the
academy waiting for her to pick them up, Knapp said.
She was traveling west on Plano Parkway when she stopped to turn left at a light
turned green, she made her turn and the car was struck on the right side by the
18-wheeler-truck as it went through the intersection, Knapp said.
He said witnesses told police the truck driver was traveling at or a little
below 45 miles an hour - the posted speed limit.
"According to witnesses, both had a green light," Knapp said, "No one saw a
green arrow."
Smith's truck had a 40-foot-long trailer filled with compost trash being
transported to a landfill, Knapp said.
"He tried to swerve, but when you are carrying 80,000 pounds, the truck is a
little hard to move," Knapp said.
