OBITUARY

Michael Eugene Nelson
Farmers Branch
January 29, 1953 - January 19, 2025

Michael Euguene Nelson was known by many names: Big Mike, Uncle Mike, Daddy, but his favorite name was Pop.

Mike was born January 29, 1953, in Parsons, Kansas to Lloyd Doll and Geraldine Nelson, as the first of eight children. Mike's early years in Kansas were spent on the family farm and attending a one-room schoolhouse. Mike’s family moved to Texas when he was ten years old and he attended Mclaughlin Elementary, Vivian Field Middle School, and R.L. Turner High School (class of 1971) in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch school district. After graduating high school Mike became a jack-of-all trades guy, spending time working in the HVAC and construction industries, before starting his own fuel systems company in the early 2000s.

Mike was an avid hunter and fishermen. A hobby he enjoyed with his uncle Bill, brothers, nephews, daughter Jenae, son-in-law Billy Bob, and especially with his two grandsons. Mike’s love for the outdoors inspired him to start his own knife-making company in the early 2000s, making customized hunting knives (or leather openers and serving utensils for his non-hunting loved ones).

Mike leaves behind a family that loved him wholeheartedly and will miss him terribly. He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Vicki Nelson, daughters Amanda and her husband Billy Bob Messer, Jenae and her wife Dara Nelson, and the two joys of his life: grandsons Bo and Easton Messer.

Mike passed from this world on January 19, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. He was proceeded in death by his parents Lloyd (Jerry) and Geraldine (Gerry) Nelson, brothers Brad and Mark Nelson and sisters Rebecca (Becky) and Colleen Nelson. He is survived by brothers Craig and Jeff Nelson, sister Arlene Posey, many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Mike’s family is thankful for the continual relationship his nephews Zach Nelson and William Posey maintained with him over the last few years, especially this last year.

If you knew Mike, you knew he always had a story to share, never knew a stranger, and would make sure you were taken care of if you needed help.

Pop was always the best playmate, napping Buddy, and especially the best repairman for all of Bo and Easton's toys and tools. He always was the best person to tell stories to and the best storyteller we knew. Pop always shared the best snacks including root beer, cheese balls, popcorn, watermelon slushes from Sonic, and best of all Ritz crackers with crab dip. Most of all, he was the best person we knew. Pop, we know you are now our guardian angel and will always be with us. Love, Bo and Easton
