Pro Rodeo Announcer, voice of Black Hills Roundup Chad Nicholson dies in California accident
Gary Matthews & News Staff - May 19, 2019

UNDATED - The well known rodeo voice of the Black Hills Roundup, Chad Nicholson, has reportedly died following an accident in California.

The California Highway Patrol and Tulare County authorities say the well known rodeo announcer and voice over artist died in a four-wheeling accident off Highway 245 in the foothills of Tulare County. However, the exact circumstances of the Friday night incident aren't yet known.

The Visalia Times reported Nicholson and a group of friends were visiting a cabin in the area for a yearly get-together.

Nicholson's voice is well known in this area. He has been the rodeo announcer for the Black Hills Roundup for many years and was the voice on a handful of radio and television commercials as well.

This year is the 100-year celebration of the Black Hills Roundup and a post on their website Saturday offered condolences to the Nicholson family.

"We are so saddened to hear of the passing of our great friend and long time Black Hills Roundup Rodeo Announcer Chad Nicholson. Please keep his wife Jennifer and the Riata Ranch Girls and all of Chad’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers as they face this difficult time," the post read.

Nicholson was a Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association Announcer for the past 23 years, lending his voice to hundreds of rodeos over the years.

He has also won numerous awards over the years.

Legendary rodeo announcer Chad Nicholson dies in 4-wheeling accident

Many are saying a "Cowboy Prayer" for Chad Nicholson, a beloved rodeo announcer and voice over artist, who was killed late Friday in a 4-wheeling accident off Highway 245 in the foothills of Tulare County.

Cal Fire, California Highway Patrol and Tulare County deputies responded to the scene located about 20 miles above the Woodlake Lions Rodeo, which Nicholson had attended just days ago as a spectator, according to a Mother's Day tweet.

A tow rope snapped, sending a vehicle plunging 30-40 feet down a ravine in the mountainous terrain, according to a CHP report.

It's unclear if Nicholson was inside the vehicle when it rolled off the cliff about 4 miles off the 245, on private land.

Recent rains may have played a role in the accident.

Nicholson and a group of friends were visiting a cabin in the area for a yearly get-together, a man familiar with Nicholson said.

"We all knew and loved Chad. He was a great ambassador for the sport of rodeo," said Trilby Barton, a Woodlake Lions spokeswoman. "We are all very saddened by this tragic news."

Nicholson last announced at the annual Tulare County rodeo in 2015.

"He was a great announcer and a great friend," said John Wood, a Woodlake Lions member who knew Nicholson for 25 years. "His voice will be missed my many."

Nicholson was a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Announcer who served as the voice of hundreds, if not thousands, of rodeos across his 23-year career, including the Ram National Circuit Finals in 2002.

Nicholson was named California Cowboys Pro Rodeo Association Announcer of the Year in 1995.

Also a member of the Three Rivers Lions, Nicholson was a local legend active in the rodeo community, Wood said.

Wood said he introduced Nicholson to his wife, Jennifer, also a rodeo icon with the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls.

"It saddens me greatly. My good friend and a friend to many, Chad Nicholson, a rodeo legend, went on to be with the Lord last night," Sheriff Mike Boudreaux said in Facebook post. "My condolences and heartfelt prayers to his wife Jennifer along with his family and friends."

"I know I will miss him and I know he will be missed by all," the sheriff added.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
