OBITUARY
 
Edwin Dale Odom
Born: July 10, 1929
Died: May 26, 2015

Edwin Dale Odom, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of North Texas. Born in Sanger, Texas, July 10, 1929 to Roy Edwin and Dora Mae Odom. Married LaVerne Masten in Sanger on January 2, 1949. He died on Tuesday May 26, 2015 at The Vintage in Denton.

He was a graduate of Sanger High School, held B.A. and M.A. degrees from North Texas State College, and a Ph.D. from Tulane University of Louisiana. He was an instructor at Victoria College and Tulane University and teacher at Carrollton High School. He retired in 1994, after 35 years of service, from the University of North Texas Department of History, but taught every other semester at UNT until the Spring semester of 2003. He was an occasional substitute teacher for the Denton independent School District until 2009.

He was a member and served as Chair of the Denton County Historical commission, 1971-1979; member of Denton Country Club, 1966-1986; member and Sunday School Teacher at First Baptist Church of Denton; former member of the “First Fifty Years of the History of Grace Temple Baptist Church” 1999. He was a member of many scholarly organizations and read scholarly papers or served as chair of sessions at many of them. He has been listed in Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, The Directory of Scholars and other directories of distinguished persons.

With his wife, LaVerne Masten Odom he was the author and publisher of “An Illustrated History of Denton County, Texas from Peters Colony to Metroplex.”: published in 1996. He was the author of several scholarly articles, newspaper articles, encyclopedia articles and book chapters.

He is survived by his daughter, Phyllis Suzanne Koroly and her husband Jeff of Denton; son, Dan Odom of Denton; sister, Janelle Shelton and her husband Gray of Sanger; brothers, Neal Odom of Sanger, Jimmy Odom and his wife Marian of Sanger; four grandchildren, Devin Reynolds and his wife Kelly of Seattle, WA, Brooke Reynolds of Mesquite, Lane Koroly of Denton, Miles Koroly of Denton; great-grandchildren, Presley Eubanks, Kaden Reynolds, Logan Reynolds.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife LaVerne; son, Roger Odom.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 AM Saturday, May 30, 2015 at New Life Church, 1350 Milam Road, Sanger, TX 76266.
